We are delighted to invite you to a lecture by Professor Emerita Josine Blok, former chair of Ancient History at Utrecht University. Josine will be speaking about the topic of her recent book:
Drawing Lots
Co-authored with Prof Irad Malkin, Oxford University Press, 2025.
In this talk, Josine Blok will examine the interaction between two foundational attitudes of ancient Greek society: religion and drawing lots. For the Greeks, every facet of life and every human action relied on collaboration with the gods. Drawing lots was a means of decision making applied in a wide range of institutions on an egalitarian basis. How was drawing lots applied in religion, and how impacted religion on drawing lots?
Graduate students, post-graduate students and faculty are invited to be present for this thought-provoking event, organized by the Sacrality Seminar and the Network of Ancient Studies.
Josine’s Lecture will be followed by drinks at café Hofman.
